Professor Christof Heyns, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, has delivered his 22-page report on lethal autonomous robotic weapons – or killer robots – to the Human Rights Council on May 29.
His presentation was also a platform for the first-ever debate about the challenges posed by these fully autonomous weapons at the Human Rights Council.
It is now the council’s turn to consider how to act on the report’s recommendations, including its call on nations to institute an immediate moratorium on these weapons and work for an international agreement that addresses the many concerns identified in the report.
