Conferences and meetings to help reduce Armed Violence 2013

This is a list of the remaining major international conferences and meetings that are set to discuss Armed Violence reduction around the world (at the time of publication this list is between August and December 2013).

Lusaka, Zambia4th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster MunitionsThis is the Annual Meeting of State Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions. It is a yearly opportunity to discuss successes and challenges in implementing the Convention.

London UKExplosive weapons experts meetingThis is a closed meeting that will convene the major experts on the issue of explosive weapons to discuss the humanitarian consequences of the use of explosive weapons in areas where civilians are living, and look at possible ways forward to address this problem.

17-26 Sept

New YorkUnited Nations General Assembly 68th SessionThe yearly meeting of the UN Member States will begin on 17 September. From 23 to 26 September a number of high level meetings, usually attended by Ministers, will talk about the post 2015 Millennium Development Goals, specifically focusing on disability and development. On 26 September State Parties will specifically focus on nuclear disarmament.

New YorkUN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International SecurityThis is the yearly meeting of UN Member States that looks at disarmament. Cluster munitions, landmines, arms trade and other relevant issues are discussed during this month.

New YorkHumanitarian Disarmament Campaign MeetingThis meeting provides civil society organisations working on disarmament with a forum to share experiences and strategize on how to support each others’ efforts to move disarmament campaigns forward.

BostonSymposium on recognition of rights and assistance for victims of armed conflictThis closed meeting will focus on discussing rights of victims of conflict and armed violence. It will bring together a range of experts in this field to move forward the international debate on this issue.

GenevaConvention on Certain Conventional Weapons Meeting of States Parties, Protocol V and Amended Protocol II Meetings of High Contracting PartiesThis is the yearly meeting of the Member States of this Convention. The CCW is the main body of the UN discussing weapon issues. It focuses primarily on implementation of its various protocols on blinding lasers, landmines etc.

Mexico City6th Milestones in a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention MeetingThis is the yearly meeting of the Violence Prevention Alliance that includes experts from civil society and international organisations that work to prevent violence through a health perspective.

18-22 Nov

NairobiInternational Conference of Crisis MappersThis conference is dedicated to field experts that want to improve their knowledge on technologies to monitor violence and conflict.

Geneva13th Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban TreatyThis is the yearly meeting of State Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty. It is an opportunity to discuss challenges and successes in implementing the treaty.
