Victims of armed violence rarely have an opportunity to be heard. While weapons and acts of violence are widely reported, the voices of victims are often ignored or marginalised.
One of AOAV’s partners, the Human Security Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (SEHLAC), came up with an innovative campaign to increase the visibility of victims of armed violence. The campaign ‘Put a Face to Armed Violence’ (Ponle Cara a La Violencia Armada) invited participants to submit a short video, including victim testimony, in order to tell their story. The videos were submitted to SEHLAC, who then invited the public to vote for their favourite.
The results are interesting, innovative and allow victims to tell their story in a unique way. They speak of strength and power to recover from a gunshot, of loss and pain when a friend dies due to a landmine and of fear and courage that saved the life of a victim of kidnapping.
The winning three videos are below, and are well worth watching.
