Operation Barkhane is a French force of 3,000, that are stationed in Chad’s capital N’Djamena. Part of this force are based in permanent support in Gao, Mali. The operation is part of counter insurgent operations Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Mauritania, in an effort by the French forces to assist in counter terrorism operations, due to their historic tie with the region.
The French provide support to the local forces and assist in capacity building efforts to help tackle terrorism and terrorist-related activities.
