Mississippi has the highest firearm mortality rate in the United States, according to new research that analysed gun deaths across all 50 states.
The study, conducted by Bader Scott Injury Lawyers, examined firearm-related fatalities between 2018 and 2022, using data from the National Center for Health Statistics. It found that Mississippi recorded an average of 27.8 firearm deaths per 100,000 people, nearly double the national average of 14.7.
The state’s highest rate came in 2021, when it hit 33.9 per 100,000, while its lowest during the study period was 22.9 in 2018.

Mississippi was followed by Louisiana (25.4 per 100,000), New Mexico (24.1), Alabama (23.9), and Alaska (23.3) as the states with the highest gun death rates.
A spokesperson for Bader Scott Injury Lawyers said the findings highlight how poverty and inequality fuel high levels of gun violence: “This is a wake-up call for policymakers to address the crisis and push for public safety measures over individual gun rights.”
Dr Iain Overton, Executive Director of Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), commented on the findings: “Mississippi’s firearm mortality rate is not just a statistic—it is a stark reminder of the human cost of gun violence in America. The sheer scale of deaths in a single state should prompt urgent reflection on how access to firearms, economic hardship, and systemic inequalities combine to create a public health emergency. Without bold action, the cycle of violence will continue to devastate lives.”
