Volunteer Researcher ‘21st Century Global Mass Shooting Database’ project



Based: Remote

Commitment: Part-time, flexible hours (minimum 10 hours per week)

Duration: 3-6 months (with possibility of extension)


About Action on Armed Violence:

Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to reducing the impact of armed violence on communities and individuals. We conduct research, advocacy, and education programs to promote a better understanding of armed violence, its consequences, and the most effective ways to prevent and mitigate its effects.


Purpose of the Role:

You will play a crucial role in supporting AOAV’s research initiative by gathering, analysing, and interpreting data on armed violence and its impact on affected communities. As a Volunteer Researcher on the ‘21st Century Global Mass Shooting Database’ project, you will be involved in research and data collection on incidents of mass shootings worldwide. The impact of gun violence is a critical issue that impacts societies and healthcare systems worldwide, yet there is currently no comprehensive global data set dedicated to documenting global mass shooting incidents. Your work will directly contribute to the AOAV’ goal of understanding and reducing the harm caused by armed violence worldwide.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and collect media of mass shootings using a variety of different sources, including local and national media, wire stories, official security statements, and non-governmental reports.
  • Cross-checking information for reliability.
  • Analyse incidents of mass shootings according to the requirements of our database.
  • Please note that this positions involves extensive research on the details of the consequences of gun violence.



  • A strong interest in the field of armed violence prevention and mitigation.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, on at least a professional working level is a strong asset.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to critically interpret data and written reports and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively, while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work.
  • A bachelor’s degree or current enrolment in a relevant field (such as political science, international relations, sociology, criminology, or public health) is preferred but not required.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to build your professional network, enhance your CV, and develop a deeper understanding of armed violence and its impacts on communities worldwide. Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer position.
