About Action on Armed Violence:
Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to reducing the impact of armed violence on communities and individuals. We conduct research, advocacy, and education programs to promote a better understanding of armed violence, its consequences, and the most effective ways to prevent and mitigate its effects.

Purpose of the Role:
As a Volunteer Researcher, you will play a crucial role in supporting AOAV’s research initiatives by gathering, analysing, and interpreting data on armed violence and its impact on affected communities. Your work will directly contribute to the organisation’s goal of understanding and reducing the harm caused by armed violence worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct research on armed violence, its causes, consequences, and prevention strategies using a variety of sources, including academic journals, news articles, government reports, and primary data.
  2. Analyse and synthesise research findings to identify key trends, patterns, and insights.
  3. Draft reports, briefings, and other written materials summarising research findings and their implications for policy and practice.
  4. Collaborate with AOAV staff and other researchers to contribute to the development of new research projects and initiatives.
  5. Attend and participate in virtual team meetings and training sessions.
  6. Stay up-to-date on relevant literature, events, and policy developments in the field of armed violence prevention.


  1. A strong interest in the field of armed violence prevention and mitigation.
  2. Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  4. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively, while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work.
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  6. A Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in a relevant field (such as political science, international relations, sociology, criminology, or public health) is preferred but not required.

As a Volunteer Researcher, you will gain valuable experience in research, data analysis, and report writing, while contributing to a meaningful cause. This role provides an excellent opportunity to build your professional network, enhance your CV, and develop a deeper understanding of armed violence and its impacts on communities worldwide. Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer position.
