Pakistan: 28 civilians killed and injured in five attacks over Easter weekend

Between Friday April 7th, and Monday April 10th, AOAV recorded seven incidents of explosive weapon use across Pakistan, five of which killed and injured 28 civilians.

Explosive Violence in September 2022

In September 2022, Action on Armed Violence recorded 2,880 deaths and injuries from 476 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 77% (2,220) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

At least 35 civilians were killed and 37 injured when an IED detonated on an escorted supply convoy heading to Ouagadougou. The attack took place between Djibo and Bourzanga, in Soum province. Based on IED data collected over the last decade, AOAV finds that, globally, incidents of IED attacks decreased by 12% from 2019 to 2020.

On Wednesday 27 July, two explosive attacks in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region resulted in the death of 20 people and the injury of 19. 

IS and IS-Affiliated Explosive Violence in 2022

In 2022, 27 incidents have been attributed to IS and IS-affiliated groups in English language reporting, resulting in 172 civilian casualties recorded by AOAV (41 killed and 131 injured). Nine of those incidents (33%) have taken place in April, and account for 78% (134) of recorded civilian casualties of IS and IS-affiliated violence in 2022 so far.
