In an effort to tackle the escalating global crisis of gun violence, The Lancet has announced the establishment of a new Commission on Global Gun Violence and Health. This Commission aims to address the pervasive issue of gun violence, which results in an estimated 600 deaths every day and causes countless more injuries worldwide. Bringing together an interdisciplinary team of experts, including AOAV’s Executive Director, Dr Iain Overton, the Commission seeks to develop evidence-based solutions to reduce gun-related deaths and injuries, ultimately improving public health and safety on a global scale.
Understanding the Global Impact of Gun Violence
Gun violence remains a critical public health challenge, with homicides accounting for approximately 71% of global civilian gun-related deaths. Unintentional firearm discharges and self-harm also represent significant causes of death attributable to guns. The burden of gun violence is disproportionately borne by males and young people, particularly in six countries—Brazil, Colombia, India, Mexico, the USA, and Venezuela—which together account for two-thirds of global gun deaths. Beyond the fatalities, survivors often face long-term physical disabilities and psychological trauma, placing them at a higher risk of mental health disorders and substance misuse.
Socioeconomic Consequences and Wider Impacts
The Lancet report highlights the far-reaching socioeconomic impacts of gun violence, noting that it is intricately linked with issues such as poverty, gang violence, social perceptions of safety, and political instability. The proliferation of firearms, especially when they are not exclusively controlled by state authorities, can undermine social order, weaken trust in institutions, and create fragmented communities. In turn, this instability can deter business investment, reduce economic opportunities, and place additional strain on already overstretched health systems.
Economic impacts are also a major concern, as gun violence can significantly hinder economic development in affected areas. The normalization of violence and the perpetuation of fear and insecurity further compound these issues, making recovery and development even more challenging. The Commission stresses the importance of understanding these broader impacts to develop effective policies and interventions.
Key Research Areas and Objectives
The Lancet Commission on Global Gun Violence and Health is dedicated to addressing several critical questions to inform its research and policy recommendations:
- Global Burden of Gun Violence: What is the most reliable evidence on the global burden of gun violence in terms of mortality, morbidity, and injury? How can firearms be effectively modeled as risk factors for global health?
- Socioeconomic and Health Disparities: How do guns contribute to health disparities globally, and what are the economic impacts associated with the health outcomes of gun violence?
- Effective Mitigation Strategies: What are the best practices and evidence from around the world for reducing the population health consequences of gun violence?
- Influence of Policies and Cultures: How do different international gun policies and cultural attitudes influence the health consequences of gun violence?
- Barriers to Control: What are the major threats and barriers to controlling the health impacts of gun violence worldwide?
A Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Approach
Led by Professor Adnan A Hyder, the Commission emphasises a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on expertise from public health, economics, law, medicine, history, and political science, as well as insights from civil society and non-governmental sectors. This comprehensive approach is essential to understanding the full spectrum of gun violence’s impact on health, including direct and indirect outcomes and the broader socioeconomic and political contexts.
The Commission will conduct a thorough risk analysis on firearms and their health and non-health consequences. The findings will guide the development of a range of interventions and policy recommendations, tailored to the political and economic realities of different regions. The aim is to catalyze significant policy changes and encourage a collaborative response to gun violence that spans national, regional, and international levels.
Moving Forward
The Lancet Commission on Global Gun Violence and Health plans to disseminate its findings widely through the Lancet platform and other accessible formats, engaging a diverse audience, including policymakers, academics, and civil society. By inviting broad participation, the Commission seeks to amplify its impact and contribute to meaningful change in communities affected by gun violence.
This initiative represents a vital step forward in the fight against gun violence, providing a platform for new insights, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. With gun violence continuing to pose a severe threat to global health and security, the Lancet Commission’s work is crucial in developing effective, evidence-based strategies to combat this preventable tragedy and promote safer, healthier communities worldwide.
