Cranfield University is a British postgraduate and research-based university specialising in science, engineering, technology and management.

Cranfield University is said to hold a range of expertise in regard to countering IEDs. They are regularly asked to provide advice, research or training and education. Whether this be for civilians or for military organisations.

Not only to they possess IED expertise but also unique facilities – including explosives ranges and forensic laboratories – that enable Cranfield to offer specialist services for learning and training.

They have expertise in the areas:

  • Detailed technology areas such as fuzing, explosives, and triggering.
  • Active countermeasures methods and their effectiveness including physical attack, electronic attack or decoying and other means
  • Passive or procedural methods of countering IEDs including provision of armour protections, and through general awareness of signs and indicators and best practice

They run distinct courses related to Explosives and IED technology, such as their course ‘Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Capability’.
