DDG in the Sahel: Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso

Location: Bamako, Mali (field offices in Gao, Koro and Mondoro in Mali; Dori, Djibo and Thiou in Burkina Faso; and in Niamey and Ayorou in Niger).

Type: NGO

DDG has conducted MRE within these areas but perhaps more significant now is the Border Security and Management programme (BSM), that was established in February 2014. This programme seeks to reduce armed violence, improve community safety and enhance border security and management capacity in the Liptako-Gourma region. This programme has been conducted with support from the governments of Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.

The program has strengthened the border management process as well as the cooperation between the bordering countries, particularly in regard to information sharing, and between the security providers.

Training and equipment has been provided to increase actor capacity.

It is not clear however, how much of this work contributes to CIED, such as monitoring explosives and chemical precursors across the borders.

This profile is part of AOAV’s investigation into counter-IED (C-IED) actors around the globe. To see the list of all C-IED actors recorded by AOAV, see here. To see those engaged in the Middle East, the Sahel, North Africa or other highly impacted countries please see here, here, here, and here respectively. This research was made possible by funding from the NATO Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Centre of Excellence (C-IED COE).
