IABTI is a non-profit association. It is a network of all types of people working in bomb disposal, such as firefighters, police, soldiers, and analysts.

They promote engagement between those working within this field and the exchange of ideas in the hope of progress and cooperation. They hope to stimulate further research and the development of new technologies and techniques to increase the efficiency and safety when disposing of bombs.

As part of this work they provide support of various kinds. They provide financial support to worthy research projects, as well as providing statistical data of use.

They encourage and run educational/training events, particularly in regard to public safety. They hold an international training conference yearly attended by many in the field of bomb disposal. They attract speakers globally and many organisations/companies come to showcase their work and engage with the others at the event.

IABTI are also seen as experts in this regard and hence provide testimony and information to judicial systems.
